Byrne stars on the Apple TV+ show as Sheila Rubin, an aerobics entrepreneur in the 1980s whose business is booming just as her marriage is falling apart and she secretly suffers from an eating disorder. “It’s challenging,” Byrne said in depicting the illness on a dark comedy. “I did a lot of research. I spoke to people in recovery. I spoke to a wonderful young woman who worked in an ED recovery center who was every day with people in recovery and all of the behaviors.”

Deschanel will play Kelly, described as “a former sitcom star who jumps into the burgeoning fitness industry.” According to the show’s synopsis, the half-hour dark comedy “is set in the beachy paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego and follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. Sheila comes to find her own reprieve from her daily woes in the world of aerobics, but it comes with its own host of troubles as well.”

Ahead of its premiere, Apple TV+ shared the first look at the upcoming episodes, including newest cast member, Murray Bartlett, and his incredibly short shorts. The star joins the series as a rival fitness instructor named Vincent Green opposite Rose Byrne as Sheila Rubin, a San Diego housewife who finds herself after discovering aerobics. Season 2 sees Sheila navigating newer and bigger obstacles following the successful launch of her first fitness video – and that includes outrunning and outshining new competitors getting in the way of her attempt at building a full-fledged fitness empire. Among them is Vincent, a frenemy who also has garnered his own attention as a weight-loss guru and infomercial pioneer. “It’s an amazing show, so I’m excited to be on it,” Bartlett told ET about joining the series alongside Byrne, who is a fellow Aussie.
