The truth is, Apple TV+ still isn’t a serious streaming contender. Sure, it has many flashy projects with A-list names.

One of 2022’s most critically acclaimed shows returns in late summer. After a two-year wait, “Pachinko” Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on August 23.

Is it time to officially anoint Nicole Kidman as the queen of prestige television officially? Because she’s exactly that, and kudos to her and her agents for reading the tea leaves on the shifting industry ages ago. After helping usher in the new era of prestige peak TV with “Big Little Lies,” and following that up with a lot of acclaimed TV work— “Top Of The Lake” for Jane Campion, HBO’s “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers” for Hulu, Apple TV+’s “Roar,” “Special Ops: Lioness” for Paramount+, and currently on Prime Video, the series, “Expats” from director Lulu Wang— Kidman has yet another hot TV package in the works that sounds like it’ll be at the top of the most anticipated TV series of 2025.

And you used to think that Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott were fast. But is any filmmaker working as quickly and diligently these days as Guy Ritchie? The “Sherlock Holmes” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” filmmaker has been on a crazy roll since around 2019.

In an era when streaming series are seemingly dumped and then quickly forgotten or just canceled after a season or two, there exists an outlier— “Slow Horses.” This is a series that hasn’t really dominated the streaming charts, but for some reason, Apple TV+ not only keeps renewing it, but the series has a new season, like clockwork, each year. The first season of Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!” didn’t quite live up to its clever concept or undeniably talented ensemble. In a fascinating twist worthy of a great Broadway show, the second season actually makes the first year better by revealing it to be the foundation on which this year is built.

When we talk about prestige TV dramas on streaming services, we are typically discussing shows that have one A-lister or maybe a well-known filmmaker attached. However, when you talk about “Lisey’s Story,” from the top down, the show is jam-packed with massive talent that makes it a prestige-ier prestige drama than most.

When you watch the trailer for the Russo Brothers’ upcoming drama, “Cherry,” it’s clear the film focuses on the downward spiral that affects a young guy, as he deals with untreated PTSD and drug addiction. But at the heart of the film is a love story between its lead characters played by Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo.

In today’s TV news roundup, Apple TV Plus released the trailer for “Defending Jacob,” and Variety obtained an exclusive first look at the upcoming new season of “T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle.”
