Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Causeway,” starring Jennifer Lawrence as a U.S. Army soldier recovering from injuries that are physical, mental, and spiritual, is the furthest thing from a genre film. Yet it belongs to what I’ve come to think of as a genre: the slow-burn non-verbal indie gloomfest. In saying that, I don’t mean to make light of the subject. Lawrence plays Lynsey, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who returns from Afghanistan after riding in a vehicle that was struck by a bomb, which caused her to have a cerebral hemorrhage. At the start, she’s seated in a wheelchair, waiting for the home health-care worker (Jayne Houdyshell) who’s going to look after her as she undergoes rehab. Tentatively, Lynsey starts to walk, but for a while she struggles to bathe, drive, remember things. The brain injury has smashed and weakened her; she’s a person in fragments.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Steve Carell will make his Broadway debut playing the title character in a revival of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya.” The production, which will be performed at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, will begin previews April 2, 2024, and open on April 24, 2024. It promises to be a starry affair. The cast boasts William Jackson Harper (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”) as Astrov and Alfred Molina (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) as Alexander Serabryakov.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Elle Fanning will make her Broadway debut in the upcoming production of “Appropriate,” a darkly comic family drama from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The show is directed by Lila Neugebauer, the director of the acclaimed 2018 revival of “The Waverly Gallery.” Fanning, best known for her work on Hulu’s “The Great” and “Super 8,” joins a previously announced ensemble that includes Natalie Gold, Alyssa Emily Marvin, Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll. Jenkins is an Obie Award-winning playwright whose credits include “An Octoroon” and “Gloria.” “Appropriate” follows the Lafayette family as it returns to their late patriarch’s Arkansas home to deal with the remains of his estate.

When Brian Tyree Henry was approached for the Causeway role of James, a New Orleans auto mechanic “traversing this land of grief and pain and shame alone,” he found himself doing something unlike him — judging the character based on “the choices that he made,” and why he wound up where he was.
