Jockey, 28, tragically dies week after being placed into coma following horrific fall
READ MORE: Umpire Rudi Koertzen dies in car crash as Kevin Pietersen reacts to 'dreadful news'He had won earlier in the day at Cambridge, but the catastrophic brain and spinal cord damage caused by the fall caused doctors to place Yanagida into a coma.The New Zealand Herald report that his back injuries were so severe that, even if he had regained consciousness, it was unlikely he would have ever been able to walk again.His death was reported on Tuesday by racing reporter Michael Guerin, via Racenet, with Yanagida passing away as a result of the injuries he suffered in the fall.Yanagida's mother and sister had travelled to New Zealand from Japan following the incident in order to be at his bedside in recent days.The jockey had ridden in New Zealand for a number of years and enjoyed plenty of success, riding over 150 winners at Group 2, 3 and Listed level during his career.Following the news of his passing, tributes have flooded in on social media from the racing community for Yanagida, who was affectionately nicknamed Tiger by his peers.They included a tribute from fellow jockey Opie Bosson, who tweeted: “So sad. RIP Taiki.” Meanwhile, New Zealand rugby player Israel Dagg wrote: "RIP Taiki Yanagida.
