John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Living legend Hayao Miyazaki’s animated fantasy epic “The Boy and the Heron,” the latest from Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli, will open the 71st San Sebastian Festival, screening on Sept. 22. Bowing San Sebastian, Miyazaki’s film, which he has declared to be his last, will score an extraordinary double of opening both the Toronto and San Sebastian festivals in the space of a couple of weeks.

SkyShowtime has set its first Polish original, a fictional drama series that follows the tragicomic adventures of a 40-year old playboy.

Given its wins at the Venice Film Festival, the National Board of Review and the Golden Globes as well as the growing buzz, “Argentina 1985” may again clinch the honor.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Showrun and directed by Academy Award winner Juan Jose Campanella (“The Secret in Their Eyes”), burgeoning hit Paramount+ franchise “The Envoys” has gone into production on Season 2 in Galicia, North-West Spain. Miguel Angel Silvestre (“En el corredor de la muerte”) and Luis Gerardo Méndez (“Club de Cuervos”) are reprising their roles as Vatican dispatched miracle corroborators, playing alongside Assira Abbate (“Empire of Lies”), who also starred in Season 1. Described as a gripping thriller, Season 2 is again produced by VIS, Paramount’s international studio, in collaboration with 100 Bares, Campanella’s Buenos Aires production label and, this time round, Galicia’s A Coruña-based Portocabo. A producer on Movistar Plus+ hits “Hierro” and “Rapa,” Portocabo has also been behind pioneering premium TV co-productions with Portugal (“Dry Water”). 

Co-produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, the eight-episode first season of Night Sky debuted May 20. Led by Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, the sci-fi adventure ended with a shocking finale, leaving room for the possibility of another season.

John Hopewell Chief International CorrespondentAcademy Award winning director Juan José Campanella (“The Secret in Their Eyes”) has gone into production in Mexico on the first title from ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) for Paramount Plus, “Los Enviados,” an eight-part series action thriller about “two men searching for their souls,” the director told Variety.VIS has shared in exclusivity with Variety some first photos from the shoot.First fruit of a first look deal between VIS and Campanella, “Los Enviados” has also added to key cast Irene Azuela, star of Mexican movies such as “Miss Bala” and “The Obscure Spring,” as well as Netflix series “Monarca.”Azuela joins two of the Spanish-world’s biggest names, Luis Gerardo Méndez, an actor

Connolly. Argentinian director Juan José Campanella will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series, a co-production of Amazon Studios and Legendary Television. It’s scheduled to begin filming later this year.

Jamie Lang Miami-based BTF Media, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is planning a series reboot for Fabián Bielinsky’s Argentine modern classic “Nine Queens” (“Nueve Reinas”), a feature film which 20 years ago introduced the world to one of Argentina’s most bankable actors in Ricardo Darín (“The Secret in Their Eyes,” “Wild Tales”) and film-TV crossover superstar Gastón Pauls (“Todos contra Juan,” Pablo Larraín’s “Fuga”).It also established, just as the New Argentine Cinema was lifting off in the country, a crossover style of movie which could combine artistic ambition and genre heft to appeal to broad audiences at home and abroad, a filmic mode inherited by Juan José Campanella and Pablo Trapero among others.

ViacomCBS' ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) unit has signed a first-look deal with Marc Anthony’s production company, Magnus Studios. The agreement, financial details of which weren't disclosed, is part of VIS' global strategy of "establishing alliances with best talents in the entertainment industry to create and produce entertainment content for global audiences." The news comes after a recent development deal that VIS struck for animated children’s series Gloria Wants to Know It All withMagnus, Juan José Campanella’s Mundoloco Animation Studios and Lanugo Media.
