Naman Ramachandran Benedict Cumberbatch (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) and Mark Strong (Venice hit “Tár”) have joined Jodie Comer on the cast of “The End We Start From.” BAFTA winning director Mahalia Belo (“Ellen”), has commenced principal photography on the film, which is based on the novel by Megan Hunter and adapted for the screen by Alice Birch (“Normal People,” “Succession”). Also joining the cast are Joel Fry (“Cruella”), Gina McKee (“Line Of Duty”), Katherine Waterston (“Fantastic Beasts”) and Nina Sosanya (“Screw”). In the film, when an environmental crisis sees London submerged by flood waters, a young family is torn apart in the chaos.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Mark Strong (1917, Kingsman) will join the Jodie Comer-starring apocalyptic thriller The End We Start From. Both are also attached as executive producers on the film, whose principal photography has begun in London, and you can see a first-look image of Doctor Who and Killing Eve star Comer in action above.

Brent Lang Executive Editor of Film and Media Katie Sinclair has been named the new head of development at Riff Raff Entertainment, the development and production company co-founded by Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law and creative partner Ben Jackson.   She joins from Blueprint Pictures, where her credits as a development executive include Martin McDonagh’s upcoming “Banshees of Inisherin,” which is seen as a major awards season player and will screen at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals; “The Beautiful Game,” directed by Thea Sharrock; and Andrew Haigh’s “Strangers,” which stars Andrew Scott,  Paul Mescal, Claire Foy, and Jamie Bell. Sinclair has worked on “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” for Sony 3000 and Netflix. She has been heavily involved in sourcing and shepherding Blueprint’s slate of feature film projects.

She will star opposite BAFTA and Primetime Emmy winner Jodie Comer in the London-set environmental crisis movie about a mother who with her newborn child tries to find a way home amid chaotic floods. Waterston we hear will play the character of ‘O’.

Philippa Kowarsky is leaving her role as Commissioning Editor of BBC’s Storyville documentary strand after a year in post.

Naman Ramachandran BBC Storyville commissioning editor Philippa Kowarsky is departing the corporation to pursue other ventures. Director of BBC Film Eva Yates will be the interim contact for BBC Storyville until a replacement for Kowarsky is found.In a notice to BBC staff, seen by Variety, Yates wrote: “I’m writing to let you know that Philippa Kowarsky will be leaving the team to pursue other ventures outside of the BBC.

A24 has won North American rights to Charlotte Wells’ Cannes buzz title Aftersun.

K.J. Yossman “1917’s” George MacKay and “Candyman” actor Nathan Stewart-Jarrett are set to star in drag queen thriller “Femme.” The feature, which is set to shoot in London, U.K., next month, is directed by Sam H.

British actors George MacKay (1917) and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Candyman) are set to star in revenge thriller Femme, from directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping.

Martin Scorsese will pay a personal homage to influential British filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in an upcoming feature doc. Altitude is attached to handle sales of the as-yet untitled doc and has secured a release in the UK and Ireland.

Naman Ramachandran Eva Yates has been promoted to the high profile role of director of BBC Film, a position previously held by Rose Garnett, who has moved on to indie studio A24. Yates, who is currently acting director of BBC Film, will be responsible for the development and production of the 12-15 films the company produces every year. She will also oversee Storyville, the BBC’s flagship feature documentary strand, under the new leadership of Philippa Kowarsky.Yates joined the BBC in 2017.

Recent successes include the BAFTA and Critics Choice awards winning “The Power of the Dog” and “The Souvenir” and “The Souvenir: Part II.”Storyville is the broadcaster’s flagship feature documentary strand and showcases films from around the world including “Welcome to Chechnya” and “Collective.” It moved under the remit of BBC Film in 2020.

A24, the indie studio behind “Moonlight” and “Lady Bird,” has tapped BBC executives Rose Garnett and Piers Wenger to oversee its international film and TV slate.The appointments are a major coup for A24 — and a heavy loss for the BBC — given Garnett and Wenger are the go-to execs in the U.K. for film and scripted television, respectively, anywhere the Beeb is concerned.Garnett most recently served as director of BBC Film, where she has overseen a slate of movies including “The Power of the Dog,” “The Nest” and “Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always.” Prior to that, she worked at Film4 where she helped produce the likes of “The Favourite,” “Room” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.” Wenger served as director of BBC Drama, where he has overseen such hit television series as “I May Destroy You,” “Bodyguard,” “A Very English Scandal” and “Normal People.” Previously he was head of drama at Channel 4 where he commissioned “Humans,” “National Treasure,” and “The End of The F**cking World.”Both Garnett and Wenger will leave the BBC in May.
