Joe Otterson TV Reporter Netflix has given a series order to the Western action drama “The Abandons,” which hails from Kurt Sutter. The show was first reported to be in development at the streaming giant back in November 2021. Netflix has given the show a 10 episode order. The show’s official logline states: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.”

If you have listened to The Playlist Podcast, our ‘Mayans’ podcast, or just talked to me in random conversation, you know I’m a big fan of Elgin James. He’s one of the most interesting and thoughtful filmmakers working today.

Even though the body is still a bit warm and only just buried, it’s time to officially close the book on FX’s “Mayans M.C.” And what better way to do that than with an extended interview with the creative mastermind behind the series, Elgin James? If you’ve listened to The Playlist Podcast consistently over the past couple of years, you know I’m a huge fan of “Mayans M.C.” Yes, the biker drama on FX that is a “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff. In fact, I think it might just be the best series on TV today.

The elevator pitch for FX’s “Mayans M.C.” is simple—a spinoff of the hugely popular biker drama, “Sons of Anarchy,” the new show follows a Mexican-American motorcycle club from Southern California who dabbles in a bit of drug-running for cartels and battling the authorities. And for the first two seasons, that’s exactly what it was.

Prime Video will release Season 2 of on August 5. All 6 episodes of the Amazon Original series will premiere via the streamer in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Nordic countries.

EXCLUSIVE: If you’re a rabid fan of Mayans M.C., you may have recognized an ear — yes, an ear — of a popular actor in one of the drama’s teasers for the new season. At the Contenders Television panel for the FX series, executive producer Elgin James confirmed the ear belongs to Manny Montana, who will join the cast after playing Rio on NBC’s .

It can be fascinating to see how spin-off shows evolve from their original source material. Take “Better Call Saul” on AMC taking off from “Breaking Bad.” Some even consider the former to be as potent and captivating as the latter, if not more so.

FX’s Mayans M.C. is going to war in Season 4 and they’re not battling just anyone. When the show returns with back-to-back episodes on April 19, the Mayans will face off against Sons of Anarchy‘s SAMCRO—in many ways, the present is battling the past to make way for the future.

Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, and spawned from the same fictional universe as “Sons of Anarchy,” dealing with the Sons’ rivals-turned-allies, “Mayans M.C.” has really come into its own in recent years and even changed its tone in recent years as Elgin James has taken over as sole showrunner. Building up viewership and popularity over time, “Mayans M.C.” is about to be in its fourth season, which debuts on F.X.

Stephen Merchant is responsible for co-creating a series that would go on to become a massive worldwide hit, “The Office.” Elgin James, on the other hand, is the co-creator of a relatively smaller show, “Mayans MC,” but a series that has garnered quite a passionate fanbase and critical acclaim. When it began its run a few years ago, “Mayans MC” was “Sons of Anarchy” with a Latino flair. Sure, the cast was all new and the story didn’t pick up where ‘Sons’ left off, but with Kurt Sutter at the helm, “Mayans MC” felt like “Sons 2.0.” Well, with Sutter gone and Elgin James the sole showrunner, the FX drama isn’t just moving further away from its ‘Sons’ past, but it’s actually much, much better because of it.

After last night’s finale, “Mayans MC” has just wrapped up its third season on FX. But if you’ve been watching the series since the beginning, you know that Season 3 is a milestone for ‘Mayans,’ as it shed its “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff title and became something…else.
