Thirty years ago, US law enforcement executed a warrant on a large compound in Texas that belonged to religious leader David Koresh and the doomsday cult the Branch Davidians. What followed was the biggest gunfight on American soil since the Civil War that ended with a fiery inferno captured live on national television.

Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma on 19 April 1995, killing 168 people and injuring 680 more. His close ties to white supremacist Richard Snell, a convicted murderer put to death by lethal injection that same day, might — reasonably — lead one, and especially people of color, to wonder why this man needs the oxygen of publicity, nearly 23 years after his own execution. But Mike Ott’s film is a rare study of the radicalization of white working-class Americans, a phenomenon that went overground in Washington DC on 6 January 2021.

Waco: American Apocalypse charts the story of the 1993 cult massacre which led to the deaths of 86 people.Directed by Tiller Russell (Night Stalker), the Netflix series details what happened in Waco, Texas when cult leader David Koresh and his followers went up against the US federal government in a 51-day siege.While the tragedy has been the basis of many documentaries and screen adaptations, Waco: American Apocalypse boasts access to unearthed FBI wiretap recordings and videotapes filmed inside the FBI’s Hostage Negotiation Command Post.The series spans three episodes in total, which will be released Wednesday March 22 on Netflix at 7am GMT.Netflix released a trailer for the documentary series last month – check it out above.The series features interviews with three former members of the Branch Davidians, including Kathy Schroeder, who served three years in prison for her role in the siege, and Heather Jones who was the last child to escape the compound.Speaking to the Guardian, Russell said: “They had conflicted feelings, but still a lot of love. I mean, it was among the best moments of their lives, and among the worst moments of their lives.

European Film Promotion Unveils 2023 European Shooting StarsBelgian actress Joely Mbundu, co-star of  Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne’s Cannes 2022 feature Tori And Lokita, is among the eight rising talents selected for the 2023 edition of European Film Promotion’s European Shooting Stars initiative. The selection also includes Italy’s Benedetta Porcaroli, seen recently in Venice Horizons 2022 title Amanda, and Norway’s Kristine Kujath Thorp, who previously made her mark in Fanny, The Burning Sea and Ninjababy, and also won praise for her performance in Cannes Certain Regard 2022 selection Sick of Myself. The other spotlighted titles comprise Alina Tomnikov (Finland), Leonie Benesch (Germany),  Yannick Jozefzoon (The Netherlands), Judith State(Romania), Gizem Erdogan (Sweden) and Kayije Kagame (Switzerland) Thorvaldur Kristjansson (Iceland). This year’s talents were selected by an eight-person jury featuring Polish director Jan Komasa, Dutch casting director Rebecca van Unen and Norwegian producer Maria Ekerhovd. The eight talents will participate in a four-day program during the upcoming Berlin Film Festival (February 16-26), during which they will meet journalists, casting directors, producers and filmmakers.
