‘Burial’ Review: A Ghoulish Military Mission in the Last Days of World War 2

Dennis Harvey Film CriticNazi ghouls have figured in plenty of horror movies, whether preserved (1966’s “The Frozen Dead”), newly bioengineered (1978’s “The Boys from Brazil”) or zombiefied (too many to list). Edging close to that terrain, “Burial” revolves around a corpse — the corpse, as far as WWII’s end was concerned — that does not reanimate or otherwise come “back to life,” but poses a grave threat nonetheless.Not-quite-horror despite its macabre theme and mood, this sophomore directorial feature for Ben Parker is a handsomely produced period thriller that delivers in terms of action and atmospherics, even if his somewhat convoluted story doesn’t maximally pay off. IFC Midnight is releasing the Estonia-shot U.K. production to limited U.S. theaters and on-demand platforms Sept. 2.

In the last days of WWII, a band of Allied soldiers trafficking Hitler’s remains out of Germany are ambushed by Nazi Wehrwolf fighters. That’s the simple, but effective premise for a new IFC Midnight thriller called, “Burial.” Written and directed by British filmmaker Ben Parker, known for “The Chamber” (2016), “Burial” stars Charlotte Vega (“Wrong Turn”), Tom Felton (the “Harry Potter” franchise), and Harriet Walter (“Killing Eve,” “Succession”).

IFC Midnight Deal For ‘Burial’; $10M Saudi Fund; Sam Riley Cannes Market Project — Global Briefs

IFC Midnight has boarded U.S. rights to UK genre pic Burial. Principal photography has recently completed on the movie, the second feature from Ben Parker. The movie follows a small group of Russian soldiers on a secret mission to transport Hitler’s body out of enemy territory and back to Russia. Starring are Charlotte Vega, Tom Felton and Harriet Walter. Altitude Film Sales handled international sales and has released a first look at the project (above). Other confirmed distributors include Portugal (Nos), Baltics (Latvian Theatrical Distr), Indonesia (PT Prima), South Korea (Noori), Vietnam (Media Film International), Middle East (Phars).
