Person found dead on railway line as trains stopped on major route

A person has been found dead on the tracks near to a train station between Manchester and Liverpool. All trains have been suspended between Newton-le-Willows and Eccles after emergency services were called to the incident close to Newton-le-Willows station.

Officers from the British Transport Police were called to reports of a 'casualty on the tracks' shortly before 4.40pm today (Sunday).

Paramedics also attended and a person was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the person's death. The disruption is expected to last until the end of the day, according to National Rail. In a statement, a spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line near Newton-le-Willows railway station at 4:39pm on 15 December to reports of a casualty on the tracks. "Officers attended alongside Paramedics, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
