Oldham MP Jim McMahon steps down from Labour's shadow cabinet
manchestereveningnews.co.ukAn Oldham MP has stepped down from Labour's shadow cabinet as he faces a 'testing' recovery from illness. Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, resigned from the position of shadow environment secretary this morning (September 4).
It was a position he had held since November 2021. In a letter to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, Mr McMahon spoke of the 'personal challenges' he has faced while recovering from a serious illness, while the party leader acknowledged 'abuse' Mr McMahon had faced in a reply to the Greater Manchester MP.
Mr McMahon told the Mirror earlier this year he had suffered an infection that was causing inflammation of the abdomen, which led to him spending time in hospital last autumn.
In his letter to Sir Keir today, Mr McMahon insisted it was the right moment for him to step down from his frontbench role.
