US fugitive Nicholas Rossi has been released on bail by officers investigating a rape allegation against him in England. It is understood that the 36-year-old is now being transferred back to HMP Edinburgh after being questioned at an English prison on Wednesday.Investigators have confirmed his release from their custody until January 3, 2024, while they make further enquiries into the historic rape claim.
The alleged victim, 42, previously told the Sunday Mail how she was in an abusive relationship with him after they met on a dating website.She complained to police she was raped during the time he stayed at her home in Essex.
Rossi - also known as Nicholas Alahverdian - had been fighting a long drawn out extradition battle in Scotland after arguing that he was the victim of mistaken identity.He is wanted in the state of Utah for two charges of rape and one of sexual assault.
After fleeing to the UK to avoid police who were searching for him over the rape allegations, Rossi later met his wife Miranda Knight, who is standing by him.In February 2020 - a week after they were married in Bristol - he set up an elaborate online hoax where he claimed he'd died of cancer in his home state of Rhode Island.Rossi was arrested in December 2021 in Glasgow where he fled to from Bristol, again trying to avoid police.
