The savage death of an Asian giant hornet was caught on video when it tried to invade a hive of Japanese bees only to be cooked alive by its defenders.
Surfacing again after reports that the so-called “murder hornets” are invading the US, the clip from the BBC2 documentary Natural World has been seen more than 5 million times on Twitter.
In the video, a hornet breaks into the nest and grabs a worker bee in its pincers. According to the narrator, this is the signal they have been waiting for, and, in unison, the bees swarm the hornet which is quickly buried by the buzzing mass.
The bees do not sting the hornet but trap it in a ball made of their own bodies. Vibrating their wings, the bees create an oven that cooks the doomed hornet alive
