Up to 35 million people could get weight loss coaches under plans to tackle the nation's obesity crisis. Public Health England will train existing staff at GP surgeries for the roles while doctors’ pay will be boosted for increasing referrals to slimming clubs and online weight loss schemes.

GPs will also be told to prescribe exercise and social activities – while the NHS will launch a 12-week weight loss app. Health Secretary Matt Hancock claims if everyone who is overweight lost 5lb, it could save the NHS more than £100million over the next five years.

The Better Health Strategy also comes after it was confirmed people with a body mass index higher than 40 have double the risk of dying from coronavirus.
