Met Office has issued weather warnings across the UK as a winter blast threatens to bring snow and widespread travel disruption. It comes after temperatures began to dip in some parts of the nation overnight, with a mild start to the week now replaced by adverse weather.
A front of heavy snow is expected to make landfall over the Highlands of Scotland in the early hours of this morning according to maps from WXCharts, with accumulations of 5cm per hour forecast in some areas.
This same band will then move down into northern England as the day goes on, mostly turning to rain as it reaches the south.
Further snowfall is predicted for Friday in all four nations of the United Kingdom. Chilly conditions are also anticipated with night-time lows of -5C expected to freeze lots of Scotland. The sharp turn has led the Met Office to issue a total of three weather warnings for this morning, with most of northern Scotland covered by a yellow warning for snow.According to the national forecaster, this means "some roads and possibly railways" could be affected by snow, resulting in "longer journey times".Motorists and pedestrians should also be aware of icy surfaces due to the risk of injuries and accidents, especially when travelling through roads on higher ground. In addition, a yellow warning for wind is in place in the North East of England and North Wales until 5am today.
