The deep freeze continues across the UK after the coldest night of winter so far. Temperatures plunged to -14.5C in northern Scotland, the Met Office confirmed.
Closer to Manchester, a figure of -7C was recorded at the Met Office's Rostherne weather station, four miles south of Altrincham.
Even chillier temperatures were expected on higher ground, in areas such as Ramsbottom and Saddleworth. Freezing conditions continue across Greater Manchester today (January 10), with the cold snap set to last a while longer.
A yellow weather warning for ice has been in force for western parts of the region until 10am today, with further Met Office warnings yet to be announced.
