The Met Office has upgraded a wind alert for parts of the UK including Greater Manchester ahead of Storm Éowyn. The new amber alert will come into force at 6am on Friday and remain in place until 9pm.
It covers parts of southern Scotland, the north of England and North Wales. According to the Met Office, the strong winds may cause power cuts, damage to buildings, disruption to transport and a 'danger to life' from flying debris.
Winds could exceed 90mph in the worst affected areas, likely to be around the coast. The warnings states: "Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night.
This will bring a spell of very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60 to 70mph fairly widely inland, 70 to 80mph in some areas, and 80 to 90mph along more exposed coasts and hills (perhaps even higher in a few locations). "It should be noted that there may be a slight reduction in wind strength for a time as the centre of Storm Éowyn passes overhead, this most likely in parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, before winds rapidly increase again.
