Don't get used to the gloom, however.The weather is set for another dramatic turn as we approach the new year, with the Met Office issuing a warning for potential "severe" snowfall in parts of the UK next week as the mercury takes a steep dive.

It has been a mild Christmas, but brace yourselves for much cooler days ahead, with snow a likely sight in several locations.The upcoming days will bring continued cloudiness and mild temperatures, but also some rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the far northwest can expect drier and chillier vibes.

Sunday 29 December promises a brighter but colder outlook with gusty showers and some rain and hill snow up north. And hold onto your hats because from Tuesday 31 December1, the Met Office cautions Brits to prepare for an "erratic change" that could see more extensive snow cover the country.
