The teenager was pulled off the road between Bucks Green and Five Oaks, before being dragged to the floor and assaulted by the "heavy-built" man.
The suspect, who is described to be in his 30s, then made off on foot. West Sussex Police are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward to help them with inquiries.
The suspect is described as white, about 5'9", wearing a disease prevention face mask and a navy blue beanie hat with a long dark zip-up coat.
