The body of a man has been recovered from the River Irk in north Manchester. Emergency services rushed to Blackley at around 9am this morning (Saturday) after a member of public made the discovery in the stretch of water off Middleton Road.
Police, paramedics and fire crews all responded. Emergency service vehicles were seen lining Victoria Avenue which is perpendicular to Middleton Road and the River Irk.
A large police cordon was put up on the river bank with a blue forensic tent in the middle. The Manchester Evening News understands the body of a man was recovered from the water.
His age is not yet known. An investigation has now been launched. Detectives are said to be unsure at this stage if the death is suspicious and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem The cordon remains in place tonight as inquiries continue.
