It must feel that any good fortune Manchester City have earned in recent years is evening out this season. Key players are dropping like flies, mistakes just won't go away, and whenever the injury crisis seems like improving another blow is dealt.
Manu Akanji - one of the only players to stay relatively injury-free this term - is now out for up to ten weeks. He will miss games against Newcastle, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United, plus potential Champions League and FA Cup rounds that could follow between now and mid-April.
Akanji's form has been mixed this season but at least he has been reliable. Pressure now increases on the fitness of John Stones, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, with the chances of Stones having an extended run in midfield reduced as a result of Akanji's injury.
More pressingly, Akanji drops out against Newcastle so an alternative right-back must be found to stop Anthony Gordon. Rico Lewis is probably ahead of Matheus Nunes given he came on against Real Madrid, and Nunes has had fitness worries of his own.
