Manuel Akanji injury blow leaves make-or-break run for two Man City teammates amid Real Madrid test

Manchester City's run of games where all four of their centre-backs were available didn't even last 90 minutes. With Manu Akanji hobbling off at half-time vs Real Madrid, City threw away 1-0 and 2-1 leads to face an uphill battle in the Champions League.

That test for next week's Champions League play-off second leg just got a whole lot harder with the news that Akanji looks set to miss out in Madrid.

Reports late on Thursday indicated a lay-off for Akanji that will last weeks rather than days, potentially ruling him out against Newcastle, Madrid, then Liverpool next weekend as a minimum.

Having shown much-needed solidity in shoring up the right-back area against Madrid, Akanji now leaves Rico Lewis or Matheus Nunes to face Anthony Gordon, Vinicius Jr and Mohamed Salah (or Cody Gakpo) in the next three games.
