A man has been sentenced to six months in jail after he kept his dead mother’s corpse in a freezer for six months in order to continue collecting her pension.

Named only as Mr Wu, the son had stored his mum's body in the freezer since her death on April 4 last year. The case was only revealed when concerned community workers went looking for the 68-year-old.

When police were called and gained access to the property in Baoshan District Procuratorate in East China, they found her frozen body.

Mr Wu was fined 10,000 RMB (£1,097) in addition to being ordered to pay back just over 24,000 RMB (£2,634 GBP) of unlawfully gained money, Shanghai’s Baoshan People’s Court ruled.
