The suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance reportedly fled German police to avoid youth custody in 1995. The 43-year-old German national named in media as Christian Brueckner is reportedly serving a seven-year prison sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005.
Brueckner has also been convicted for sex offences against girls. In 1994 he was convicted in Germany of sexual abuse of a child, attempted sexual abuse of a child, and carrying out sexual acts in front of a child, the Guardian reports.
But the next year, aged 18, he reportedly fled the country with a girlfriend and went to Portugal to avoid the youth sentence he had received.
