Madeleine McCann’s parents will be alone on the anniversary of her disappearance for the first time this year because of the lockdown.

Kate and Gerry usually attend a prayer service to mark the grim date on which she vanished from a holiday flat in Portugal in 2007.

They had hoped the PM would announce an easing of Covid-19 restrictions on Thursday. But the ongoing lockdown means they cannot gather with well-wishers at the war memorial in Rothley, Leicestershire, on Sunday.

Instead, they will spend the 13th anniversary at home with twins Sean and Amelie, 15, and hold an online vigil with relatives.
