A global outbreak of a potentially deadly strain of Mpox has raised alarm as cases spike across multiple continents. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spread of Mpox a public health emergency last year following a surge in cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A new strain of the virus, called Clade Ib, has caused outbreaks in previously unaffected areas of the country, spreading across the globe to nations that had not previously reported Mpox, WHO said.
A new case of Clade Ib Mpox was confirmed in the UK this week (January 27) by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), marking the seventh known case in the country since October last year.
Despite the spike in UK cases, health bosses say the risk to the general population is low. Professor Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Adviser at UKHSA, said: “The risk to the UK population remains low.
