A firm favourite from Cannes Film Festival last year and one that went on to win the Jury Prize, first-time feature director Ladj Ly's film Les Miserables is a sweeping yet focused tale.

Ambitiously taking its title from Victor Hugo's seminal novel, Les Miserables continues to address the cycle of poverty, oppression, and abuses of power in the suburbs of Paris, France.

The film begins its story with Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), a new arrival at the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil - the suburb where Hugo wrote his seminal novel.
