Lanarkshire priest condemns tragic deaths in English channel

A Lanarkshire priest has called on the UK Government to avoid thinking of "shutting the door" on desperate migrants trying to cross across the English Channel.A migrant boat tragically capsized last Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of four people, while 39 others had to be rescued.The incident occurred as the UK Government continue to discuss hardline plans to cut down on illegal immigrants crossing over, with the home secretary Suella Braverman recently accused of "demonising" migrants.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

In a Facebook post Fr Morton stated: "At least three people have lost their lives and 30 others had to be rescued, having been in the waters of the English channel during the night."Now is not the time to be speaking of an “invasion” or to be thinking of ways in which we can ‘shut the door’ - this will only mean even more desperate attempts from these people who have come a long way."It is reckoned that 45,000 have tried to make this dangerous crossing over the last year.
