Whether you're a fan or not, there's no denying that mushrooms are a key seasonal produce. Yet, many of us don't know the best ways to store them.To help with this, Vlatka Lake, a storage expert from Space Station, has shared her top tips on how to keep mushrooms fresh and tasty for longer.

Given their delicate nature, mushrooms need careful handling, with moisture, temperature, and packaging all playing a vital role.Interestingly, storing them with a wooden spoon can help maintain their firm texture and subtle flavour.

Wood naturally absorbs excess moisture, helping to stop mushrooms from turning mushy or slimy while keeping the humidity they need, reports the Express. The expert advised: "In general, mushrooms thrive in cold and well-ventilated environments.

This means if you want to keep them fresher for longer, it's crucial you place them in the fridge. "Avoid freezing fresh mushrooms, however, as once thawed, they can get soggy and lose flavour."Lake highlighted the importance of balanced airflow, explaining that too little can cause mushrooms to dry out and lose their taste, while too much may lead to spoilage.
