Japanese comedian Ken Shimura dies aged 70 after contracting coronavirus

Japanese comedian Ken Shimura has died aged 70 from pneumonia after contracting coronavirus. He is believed to be the first celebrity to die from the Covid-19 condition in the country.

Shimura had been treated at a Tokyo hospital, however he died of the virus Sunday, 29 March, his agency, Izawa Office, confirmed.

Local media have reported Shimura was admitted to hospital on 20 March with fever and pneumonia and tested positive for Covid-19 three days later.

The comedian was a fixture on Japanese television for decades and was reportedly set for his first starring role in a feature film before falling ill, in the Yoji Yamada comedy God of Cinema.
