Shelley King delivered one of the most heavy-hitting and heart-wrenching soap storylines ever as abused wife Yasmeen on Coronation Street but has faced her own grueling battles in her personal life.
The actress has opened up about coming out and admitted that she tried to have relationships with men because she struggled to meet other gay women.
Shelley, now 65, eventually came out to her parents when she 42 and in a heartfelt personal essay says that the lack of lesbian representation in the media only fuelled her of addressing who she really was.
In the essay, published in The Metro she writes: ‘ I read books and plays and saw films about women who were attracted to other women seeking some representation.
