I guess it was only a matter of time before the celebrity Covid doctors had had their day. Instead of T-cells and B-cells, talk is now of ‘energy efficiency’, ‘demand flexibility service’ and ‘time of use tariff’.

Previously, at social gatherings I have always enjoyed being lead animator and story teller. I like nothing better than to stand up in front of a crowd and make a speech, sing a song or recite a poem for a special celebration.

Not wanting to begrudge my husband his hour of glory, I nevertheless feel a bit knocked off my perch. At a recent post-summer get together with our close friends, my tales of our hiking holiday were highjacked en masse as guests quizzed Alain on what on earth is happening with the energy market (“War-induced turmoil due to a squeeze on supply-line from Russia is causing greater demand from other sources and subsequent price hikes”), whether we will have blackouts this winter (“possibly”), and what we should all be doing about it (“prepare candles and torches, just in case. ”)Now energy matters, including how to change energy providers, EDF pilot schemes and windfarms, which until now I had vetoed at public occasions, are now at the top of everyone’s agenda.
