Still, a structural engineer declares the previous subsidence is no longer a worry; the electrician and damp specialists reports are far better than I feared – running into thousands, rather than tens of thousands, of pounds.Meanwhile, I find a builder, who makes a frank assessment of my finances and proposes a step-by-step plan for tackling the most urgent works – so I can make a cup of tea without electrocuting myself and get through winter without wheezing to death from damp – then deal with the rest later when I have the cash.
