The 51-year-old former Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday player has been Evatt's right-hand man since his first permanent managerial position at Barrow in the summer of 2018.
When Evatt to the University of Bolton Stadium last summer from the Cumbrian side, Atherton joined him in the dugout in League Two at Wanderers.
