Hopes have been raised that furlough could be replaced with a new wage support system when it ends on October 31. Chancellor Rishi Sunak is weighing up the options after a blizzard of new coronavirus restrictions were announced yesterday.

Unions were already warning the end of furlough - which paid up to 80% of wages - could make millions unemployed. Now businesses are demanding urgent new support after pubs and restaurants were slapped with a 10pm curfew.

Mr Sunak and Boris Johnson have repeatedly refused calls to extend the furlough scheme in its current form. But the Guardian now reports Mr Sunak is looking at a scheme like in Germany, where workers are kept on shorter hours - and then have the rest or part of their wage made up by
