Mr Brown passed away peacefully at his home in Llanberis at the foot of Mount Snowdon, North Wales Live reports. He had been ill for some time.
Raised in both Ardwick and Chorlton, Mr Brown, the son of a builder, was the among first of a new post-war breed of working-class climbers.
It's said he began climbing to escape the boredom of his trade. In 1955, aged 24, he made history when he and another climber, George Band, made the first ascent of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world and one of the Himalaya's most difficult peaks.
