Greg Maffei to Step Down as CEO of John Malone’s Liberty Media CEO, Charter to Acquire Liberty Broadband

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor John Malone is making big changes to his media and broadband holdings — including the departure of right-hand man Greg Maffei.

Liberty Media announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Maffei, will be stepping down from his role at the end of 2024.

Liberty Media’s Chairman, John Malone, will assume the role of interim CEO and will work closely with the Liberty Media executive team and the Board of Directors “to ensure a seamless transition.” Maffei’s exit was described as occurring “in Conjunction with Transactions to Simplify Corporate Structure.” Also Wednesday, Charter Communications and Liberty Broadband Corporation announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Charter has agreed to acquire Liberty Broadband in an all-stock transaction.

In addition, Liberty Media announced that it is pursuing a plan to split off the Liberty Live Group — which includes its 30% stake in Live Nation Entertainment.
