Today was set to mark the Grand National, one of the most spectacular events on the horse racing calendar, with punters betting and boozing throughout the afternoon.
But the famous booze-up was brought to a halt with the whole country on coronavirus lockdown. With the Covid-19 pandemic shutting down all sports, the horse race has moved from the iconic Aintree track to the virtual arena for the Virtual Grand National.
And millions are expected to tune in to see the CGI jockeys and horses when it airs on ITV at 5pm. While the cash will still be splashed, the event won’t be the same without scenes of thousands having an epic booze-up that makes Aintree so popular.
