Cavani slotted the ball past Hugo Lloris after a fine pass from Paul Pogba, but referee Chris Kavanagh was asked to consult the pitch side monitor and disallowed United's opener.
It was for an alleged foul in the build-up as Scott McTominay brushed Son Heung-min's face before the ball found Pogba. Son rolled around on the floor and the Spurs players surrounded Kavanagh in protest once the ball found its way past Lloris.
