That Roy Keane was 'not bothered' about inheriting a Manchester United squad number synonymous with George Best, Bryan Robson, and Eric Cantona was about as surprising as the government 'hitting' their test target.

Sir Alex Ferguson offered Keane the number seven after Cantona's sudden retirement in 1997, anxious to deny David Beckham the honour months after he had started dating a Spice Girl.

Keane was not entirely dismissive of the significance of squad numbers; he received the '16' when he joined United in 1993 and it 'kept me on my toes, being outside the "1" to "11"'.

The same summer that United signed Keane Premier League players received fixed squad numbers and the obsession over what is stitched onto a signing's back intensifies
