Arsenal defender William Saliba has slammed his own loan spell at Marseille this season. The French centre-back has been on loan with the Ligue 1 side since the start of the season, where he has featured regularly under Jorge Sampaoli.Saliba enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign as Marseille looked set to mount a title challenge in December and January, but a poor run of form since February has since killed those aspirations. And the 20-year-old has not held back in his assessment of his own performances lately, calling them “very average” in a refreshingly honest interview with RMC Sport.

Saliba bluntly admitted: “Since February, I’ve been very average.“There’s no need to hide. I know that I need to work, I’m a young player, but it’s no excuse.

I’m going to give everything to get back to my good level.”Despite his own criticisms, the defender has made an impressive 37 appearances already this campaign at the heart of Marseille’s defence. The youngster has become an integral part of Sampaoli’s side and the club are eager to retain his services at the end of his loan spell, according to L’Equipe. But Saliba, who is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Gunners since his £27million move in 2019, remained tight-lipped when quizzed about his future.Do you think William Saliba should be given a chance at Arsenal next season?
