British tourists heading to a clutch of popular Greek islands have been warned following an 'increase seismic activity' in the area.

The alert was issued by the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection and repeated by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It follows reports that more than 200 tremors have been detected near the island of Santorini, prompting officials to close schools and tell residents to avoid some ports and drain swimming pools.

Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has chaired an emergency meeting in Athens, as Santorini authorities prepared for a potential evacuation.

Tents have reportedly been set up in an outdoor stadium. The alert urges people not to attend large indoor gatherings and to avoid old or abandoned buildings.
