France; the teddy bear rice ball moulds of Japan; the pepper corers of north-west Spain. In my world, all are fascinating and covetable.
OK, I don’t actually need them – with the possible exception of the pepper corer, which has turned out to be the dream implement for scooping the core out of a raw quince. So which gizmos are worth having?
Obviously, a knife and a saucepan of some sort – I’m not talking about the absolute basics. Stalwarts such as a box grater, a slotted spoon and a hand whisk go without saying, too.For a gadget to earn its place it needs to do a job that can’t be done otherwise (such as a blender), or else do it substantially faster and better than you could by hand, a good vegetable peeler, say.It should also make cooking more fun – if it simply brings joy into your life, that’s good enough.
There’s plenty to disincentivise us from spending time preparing fresh food – takeaway delivery and ready meals for a start – so making kitchen time satisfying rather than stressful matters. With that in mind, get rid of anything that doesn’t really work.
