Film and TV star Gwilym Lee is to take on the role of England manager Gareth Southgate as the award-winning play Dear England prepares to head to Salford for the first time in 2025.
The acclaimed drama is billed as an "epic examination of nation and game" through the years that Southgate led the England football team.
And the new production has been updated by playwright James Graham to reflect the extraordinary final chapter of Gareth Southgate's England reign at the 2024 UEFA EURO tournament.
The National Theatre made the casting announcement today that Gwilym, known to millions for his role in long-running detective drama Midsomer Murders and more recently for his portrayal of Brian May in Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody, is to play the England player turned manager in the new production.
