The 41-year-old takes over the reigns at the Keepmoat Stadium when he was a player between 2007 and 2009, before a second spell between 2013 and 2016.
It is his first job since being sacked at League Two Salford in March, where he left the Peninsula Stadium fewer than five months after he was appointed by the Ammies.
The former Manchester United trainee was appointed as Ammies boss in early November after leaving League One side Swindon Town.
