An emergency call went out for off-duty health workers in Northern Ireland as hospitals in the country 'face into an abyss'.

The chief executive of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, which tweeted the urgent message, warned that the group's hospitals were in a 'very grave situation'.

One in four patients at the trust's hospitals - roughly 700 people - have coronavirus, compared to 400 at the peak of the first wave, Belfast Live reports.

Northern Ireland's health chiefs claim the number of Covid hospital patients will double by the third week of January compared to the current figures.
