He tweeted: "Those who attack space maybe don't realize that space represents hope for so many people." Musk has long held an ambition for heading to outer space.
On Sunday fellow billionaire rival Sir Richard Branson headed to the edge of space in his Virgin Galactic rocket in what has been dubbed the first-ever commercial space flight.
