A devastating wildfire destroyed thousands of acres of Stewartry countryside.Firefighters worked for five days to tackle the blaze which broke out in a remote area between Gatehouse and Mossdale on Thursday afternoon.At its peak there were 60 firefighters and 10 engines from crews across the south of Scotland – as well as two helicopters – trying to control the inferno which threatened houses in remote settlements including Slogarie and Grobdale.Landowner Jamie Ingall hailed the efforts of the part-time firefighters in tackling the outbreak.Mr Ingall, who lives near Parton, said: “I think we have dodged a bullet.
