The family of a father-of-two who died of altitude sickness as he was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during a 'trip of a lifetime' have paid tribute to him.

They hailed a "fabulous dad, son and brother" and said his tragic death "ripped our whole world apart". Gerrard Kennedy, 41, travelled to Tanzania on February 17, 2024, and died five days into the climb of Africa's highest peak.

Gerrard - also known as Ged - was from Vauxhall, Liverpool, and worked as a ship manager at Cammell Laird Shipyard. He had two children, Aiden, 13, and Layla, 7, and was described as an "extremely fit and active" man who enjoyed running, hiking and trekking.

He did not have any known health problems. An inquest was held into Gerrard's death at Gerard Majella Courthouse in Kirkdale on Friday, January 17.
