Dame Vera Lynn's poignant final message as she told nation 'hope remains'

Dame Vera Lynn reminded the nation that 'hope remains even in the most difficult times' in her final public address just weeks before her death.

The Forces Sweetheart died earlier today at the age of 103. In May she spoke out to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Dame Vera found huge popularity in World War Two entertaining the troops with songs including We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, that became an anthems of hope for many.

In a statement on VE day, Vera said: "Hope remains even in the most difficult of times." "I hope that VE Day will remind us all that hope remains even in the most difficult of times and that simple acts of bravery and sacrifice still define our nation as the NHS works so hard to care for us. "
